A Day in the Life: Running Your Book on RoofKnockers (For Reps)

He has 47 active leads in his book, 8 warm, 3 cold-but-promising, and one appointment at 11am with a homeowner named Mrs. Alvarez who wants to know why her insurance adjuster said her roof looks "cosmetic." Let's ride with him.

6:30am: The Phone Wakes Up Before Marcus Does

Marcus's alarm goes off. He reaches for the phone before the coffee. The RoofKnockers app is already on the home screen, not buried in a folder called "Work," because this is where his day starts.

Tile four: Accrued Commission This Pay Period. $3,840. Marcus smiles at that number, because two weeks ago it was zero. The tile is not a report he had to pull. It is just sitting there, updating itself every time a claim status changes or a deal gets signed. More on that at lunch.

No email check. No cross-reference with a whiteboard in the office. No text to a manager asking what is on the calendar. The first 30 seconds of the day are spent reading one screen. That is the bar a rep's tool should clear, and most do not.

Building the Day: Route Planner Draws the Path Before Coffee

Marcus sits up, puts coffee on, and taps over to Route. This is where the day gets built.

He has two kinds of stops to make today. The seven follow-ups sitting in the queue, and a canvass block in a new subdivision off Buckner where a hail swath hit three weeks ago and he has not been through yet. He wants to hit the follow-ups first, because warm is warm, and then spend the afternoon knocking cold doors.

On the route screen, he selects the two yellow-flagged follow-ups, then three more he thinks are worth a drive-by, and then draws a polygon on the map around a 14-street chunk of the Buckner neighborhood. The app asks if he wants to auto-optimize. He taps yes.

Three seconds later, he has a route. Start at home, hit the two yellow follow-ups first because they are on the way, roll through the other three, then park at the top of the canvass block and work it on foot. Turn-by-turn is ready to hand to Google Maps with one tap. There is no pretending the software has a better map than Google. It does not. It just knows which stops are leads, what order makes sense, and hands the driving off to the map app every rep already uses.

7:20am, First Knock: GPS, Photo, Outcome, Notes, Done in 40 Seconds

Marcus pulls up at the first follow-up. Mrs. Henson, 6201 Peavy. He knocked this door eleven days ago, she said her husband was out of town and to come back, he noted it, the system surfaced it, here he is. He rings the bell.

She answers. Her husband is home this time. They talk for four minutes. She says call tomorrow at 6pm when her husband is off work. Marcus thanks her, walks to the sidewalk, and before he gets to the truck, he logs it.

Here is what logging looks like on a roofing sales rep app that respects a rep's time. He taps the lead. The GPS has already pinned him to the exact address, so there is nothing to type. He taps the camera icon and snaps one photo of the roof from the sidewalk, because photos on file turn "I think I remember that ranch house" into "oh yeah, the one with the ridge vent that was clearly new."

Sync happens in the background. The moment his phone pings the cell tower, Mrs. Henson is now in the pipeline with a Callback status, a note, a photo, a timestamp, and a GPS pin. If he loses his phone in a lake, nothing is gone. If his manager pulls up the dashboard in the office, he sees Marcus already logged a knock. Marcus pulls up to 4412 Redbird. This is not a cold knock. This is an inspection appointment scheduled eight days ago, after Marcus knocked the door and Mrs. Alvarez said her insurance adjuster had come out, denied most of her hail damage as "cosmetic," and she was not sure what to do next.

April 13: First knock, 2:18pm, outcome Callback, note "Adjuster denied cosmetic, wants second opinion, has claim number."

April 14: Phone call outbound, 6:04pm, duration 11 minutes, note "Explained supplement process, scheduled inspection for 4/21, emailed her the DOI complaint form as backup."

April 15: Email sent, subject "Your roof inspection Tuesday 11am."

April 18: Claim status updated, source GAF integration feed, note "Carrier re-opened claim for review."

April 19: Text inbound from homeowner, "Should I cancel my adjuster? He keeps calling."

April 19: Text outbound from Marcus, "Don't cancel. We will handle it on Tuesday."

Marcus has not had to remember any of this. He walks up to the door with ten days of context loaded into his head in 30 seconds of reading. He rings the bell. Mrs. Alvarez opens it. The first thing he says is, "Good morning, I saw the carrier re-opened your claim on Friday, that is good news, let's go walk the roof."

She stares at him for a second. Then she says, "How did you know they re-opened it? They only called me yesterday." Marcus taps his phone and shows her the claim status update with the timestamp. She nods, a little impressed. The power dynamic of the conversation has already shifted. He is not a stranger in her driveway. He is the person who has been tracking her claim more closely than she has.

She takes the phone. She scrolls. She hands it back. She signs the contingency agreement 20 minutes later.

Transparency is not a nice-to-have in insurance restoration. It is the entire sales pitch. The homeowner is scared, the process takes three months, and during those three months the biggest deal-killer is not the competition, it is the neighbor over the fence. The rep who can show a homeowner exactly where their claim is, on a phone, in a driveway, wins the argument the neighbor started.

Lunch: The Commission Dashboard Tells Marcus What He Made This Week

12:40pm. Marcus grabs a taco plate at a spot off Garland Rd and sits in the truck with the AC on. He opens the app, taps the commission tile on the dashboard, and looks at what he made.

The screen is broken into three sections.

Accrued this pay period: $4,210. That is the Mrs. Alvarez signing, which just added $370 to the number, plus two deals he signed last week that are past their rescission windows.

Projected (in-progress deals): $2,840. This is the money that is likely, not locked. Four deals in various stages of the claim process, weighted by an internal probability based on claim stage. The app shows him the breakdown if he taps in. A supplement at 70%, a job scheduled at 95%, two claims awaiting adjuster response at 50%.

Paid year-to-date: $38,920. Not a projection. Money that hit his bank.

Here is what this screen does to a rep's head. It removes the question "am I going to get paid this week." That question, the one every commission rep asks on Tuesday night when the bills are due, is the single most corrosive thing in roofing sales. Reps who can answer it stay. Reps who cannot, quit.

The streets he worked two weeks ago are dense with pins. The streets he has not touched are wide-open grey. The math is not complicated. He walks to the nearest grey street and starts knocking.

Over the next 90 minutes he knocks 38 doors. Each one is the same fast loop, GPS-pinned, outcome tapped, note if needed, photo if the roof is worth saving a photo of. He ends up with 11 conversations, 4 inspections scheduled for later in the week, and 2 instant signs because the homeowners had already talked to an adjuster and were waiting for someone like Marcus to walk up.

The pattern Marcus noticed a month ago, and which the territory view made obvious, is that the streets adjacent to the storm center do better than the streets two blocks out, and the streets with 1990s-build homes do better than 2010s because the roofs are old enough to be at end-of-life regardless of the storm. He does not have to reason about this every day. The map shows him where his outcomes came from and he adjusts his canvassing path to match.

Marcus feels his phone buzz. It is a push notification from RoofKnockers. "You moved up 2 spots on the daily leaderboard. You are now #3 on the team."

He taps it. The daily leaderboard is a list of all 12 reps on the team, sorted by knocks today. Next to each name is knocks, conversations, inspections scheduled, and signed deals. Marcus is at 62 knocks, 18 conversations, 5 inspections, 1 signed. The two guys ahead of him are at 71 and 78. The guy in first has been first every day this week and Marcus wants to beat him by Friday.

The leaderboard is not a vanity feature. It is a behavior feature. The same rep, given the same territory, with the same book of leads, will knock 15 to 20 percent more doors on a day they can see their rank than on a day they cannot. The psychology is not complicated. Reps are competitive. The board activates the competition.

The adjuster meeting is already being scheduled. Marcus does not know this, because he does not have to know this, because the handoff happened without him.

Appointments: 2, because one of yesterday's new warm leads booked a Friday morning slot and one of his older follow-ups finally committed. Accrued Commission: $4,210, same as last night, because pay period is still Wednesday.

The route planner loads the new list. Mrs. Henson's callback at 6pm is already on the calendar for tonight. The Buckner block has fewer grey pins than it did yesterday. The leaderboard shows him sitting at #3 on a weekly rolling basis.

Nothing about today's screen requires thinking. It requires doing. That is the point.

What This Looks Like Over a Month

One day is a story. A month is a number. Here is what changes in Marcus's book over 30 days of working this way, versus the way he worked six months ago with a Google Sheet and a paper map.

His dropped leads, the ones he used to promise a callback and then forget, go from roughly 18% of his book to under 4%. Not because he got more organized. Because the follow-up queue does the remembering for him. That 14-point swing is, on his average ticket, somewhere between five and seven extra closed deals a month. At his commission split that is $1,800 to $2,500 in his pocket that he was previously leaving on other people's kitchen tables.

His knocks-per-day average goes from 52 to 68. Not because he works harder. Because the route planner gives him 30 to 45 more minutes of actual knocking time per day, and because the leaderboard tightens his slow hours.
