Ridge Cap vs Hip Cap Shingles: Matching Options, Timbertex, HydroStop, and Cost
Every time a crew runs out of ridge cap and makes some by cutting up 3-tab shingles, the homeowner calls me six years later wondering why their ridge is missing half its tabs. Purpose-built ridge cap exists for a reason. Here''s which one to spec with each major shingle line.
Ridge Cap vs Hip Cap: Are They Different?
In most product lines, ridge cap and hip cap are the same product. You use the same cap shingle on the ridge (horizontal line at the top of the roof) and on hips (diagonal lines where two slopes meet). The only difference is the direction the cap points and how many pieces you need per linear foot.
Some manufacturers sell a separate "starter" cap for hips that''s the same thing in different packaging. Buy whatever the pallet says "ridge and hip cap."
Why Cut Shingles Fail
A cut 3-tab shingle for use as a cap has the factory sealant strip in the wrong place. When you fold it over the ridge, the self-seal strip doesn''t bond, and the tab flaps in wind. Wind warranties on most manufacturers are voided if you use cut 3-tabs as cap on an architectural shingle roof.
Purpose-built ridge cap has:
- Sealant strip positioned for the fold
- Pre-cut dimensions matching the field shingle visual (same color blend)
- Thicker profile to match architectural shingle shadow
- Proper nail zone marked for ridge vent installation

CertainTeed HydroStop / GAF Ridge Vent Compatibility
If you''re installing ridge vent, confirm the cap is rated to go over it. Most named cap products are. The issue is older 3-tab cuts that don''t cover the ridge vent properly and leave the slot visible.
How Many Pieces Per Linear Foot
Most ridge cap gives 5-inch exposure per piece, so 12 pieces per 10 linear feet, or 4 bundles per 100 linear feet (each bundle is about 20 LF). Hip cap is slightly more because the angled nature of hips eats a bit more overlap.
Example Job Math
A simple gable roof with 32 LF of ridge needs 4 bundles of Timbertex at $14 each, total $56. A hip roof with 60 LF of hips + 12 LF of ridge (72 LF total) needs 8 bundles, $112. Add 10 percent waste.
Install Rules
- Field shingles run to the ridge and are cut flush. Don''t run them past the ridge.
- Lap direction: caps run from the prevailing wind-facing end toward the leeward end, so laps shed wind-driven rain.
- Nailing: 2 nails per cap piece, 1 inch in from each side edge, below the factory seal line. Never face-nail in the exposure area.
- Ridge vent: the cap nails must go through the vent nailing zone (usually marked on the vent). Use 2.5 inch nails to reach through the vent, cap, field shingle, and into the decking.
- End caps: fold the last cap piece down over the rake edge, 1 inch of overlap minimum.
Cost Adds Up
On a 2,400 sq ft roof with 32 LF ridge and 40 LF hips:
- Budget Z-Ridge: $72 material
- Seal-A-Ridge: $104
- Timbertex: $144
The difference between budget and premium is under $100 on most jobs. Charge it through, the homeowner won''t flinch at the material line, and the Timbertex visually matches a Timberline HDZ field. Mismatched cap looks like a different color on the ridge.
Ridge Vent Nail Gun Settings
Hard lesson: a cap gun set for field shingles (1.25") won''t reach the decking through ridge vent + cap + field shingle. Use 2" or 2.5" coil nails specifically for ridge cap over vent. The GAF Cobra Rigid 3 datasheet calls for 2.5" specifically.
Common Failures
- 3-tab cuts used as cap on architectural roof: wind warranty voided, tabs peeling at year 5.
- Short nails through ridge vent: cap blows off in first 50-mph gust.
- Wrong color cap: the ridge is 2 shades different from the field.
- Laps into prevailing wind: rain gets under the cap every thunderstorm.
RoofKnockers Material Counting
Material calculators in RoofKnockers auto-size ridge cap bundles based on ridge LF + hip LF + 10 percent waste so you never over- or under-order. See features and pricing. Also read the ridge vent guide if you''re venting at the ridge.
FAQ
Can I use Timbertex on a CertainTeed Landmark roof?
Nothing stops you physically, but the warranty requires matching manufacturer components for system coverage. Use CertainTeed Cedar Crest or Shadow Ridge on a Landmark roof.
Do I need ridge cap on a hip roof with no ridge?
You need hip cap on the hip ridges. If the hip roof has no horizontal ridge at all (pyramid), then no top ridge cap, just the diagonal hip cap.
How much extra does high-profile cap cost?
Maybe $0.50 to $1.00 per linear foot over standard cap. On a typical 60-80 LF of ridge and hips, that''s $30 to $80 extra on the whole job. Always worth it.
