Tablet-Based Presentations for Roofing: iPad vs Android, Apps, Signatures
A rep showing damage photos on a tablet closes 25 to 40% more deals than a rep showing the same photos on a phone or paper printout. The homeowner can actually see the bruises. The signature flow is clean. The proposal is professional. Tablet-based presentations are table stakes now for any roofing team selling $15k+ jobs.
iPad vs Android
Both work. The tradeoffs are different.
iPad Advantages
- Consistent hardware (all iPads of a given generation behave identically)
- Best app ecosystem for sales tools (CompanyCam, Roofr, RoofScope all launch on iPad first)
- Pencil support for markup on damage photos
- LiDAR on Pro models (instant measurements, limited usefulness but growing)
- Longer device lifespan (iPad from 2022 still runs current software in 2026)
Android Advantages
- Lower hardware cost ($300 to $600 vs iPad $500 to $1,200)
- More variety in form factors (rugged tablets, larger screens)
- Better integration with Google Workspace (native calendar, Drive, Maps)
- USB-C and standard accessories across brands
For most roofing teams, iPad wins on app quality. Android wins if budget is tight or the team already runs Google Workspace heavily.
Recommended Hardware
For a field rep tablet:
- iPad (10th gen or newer): $449 new, current for 3 to 4 years
- iPad Air (5th gen or newer): $599 new, current for 4 to 5 years
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S9: $799, flagship Android
- Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 5: $650, rugged Android
Screen size: 10 inches minimum. Smaller and the photos are too small for the homeowner to see clearly. Larger (12+ inches) gets awkward in the field.
Rugged Cases
Reps drop tablets. On driveways. Off ladders. A bare iPad dies within 90 days. A cased iPad lasts 3+ years.
Good cases:
- OtterBox Defender: $90 to $130, the standard
- UZBL rugged: $60 to $100, shoulder strap compatible
- Targus: $70 to $110, screen protector included
Features to look for: corner reinforcement, raised screen bezel, hand strap or shoulder strap, port covers.
Damage Photo Apps
Taking photos with the native camera app is fine. Organizing, annotating, and presenting them is where dedicated apps earn their keep.

Takes photos, GPS-tags them automatically, sorts by project, shares with homeowner and adjuster. Worth the cost.
The Presentation Flow
A typical tablet-based sales presentation:
- Introduction (2 minutes): rep name, company, reason for visit
- Damage walkthrough (10 to 15 minutes): photos of their specific roof, annotated bruises, wind lift evidence
- Claim process explanation (5 minutes): what the homeowner should expect from insurance
- Product options (5 to 10 minutes): shingle brands, warranties, upgrade tiers
- Scope and proposal (5 minutes): detailed proposal in PDF viewer
- Contingency signature (3 minutes): e-sign on tablet
- Next steps (2 minutes): inspection scheduled, adjuster meeting planned
Total: 30 to 45 minutes. Paper presentations run 45 to 75 minutes and close at lower rates.
E-Signature Flow
Signature apps matter:
- DocuSign: $15 to $45 per user/month. Industry standard. Fast signing flow.
- PandaDoc: $35 to $65 per user/month. Better document building, signature included.
- HelloSign (now Dropbox Sign): $20 to $50 per user/month. Clean UI.
- SignNow: $20 to $40 per user/month. Cheaper alternative.
Any of these integrate with the major roofing CRMs via Zapier or native connectors. The signed PDF lands in the CRM, the homeowner gets a copy, and the signature is legally binding in all US states under ESIGN Act and UETA.
Internet Connectivity
Cellular tablets (iPad Cellular, Samsung with LTE/5G) cost $100 to $150 more than Wi-Fi-only models. Worth it for field use.
Cellular data plans:
- T-Mobile or Verizon shared data: $10 to $20 per tablet per month
- AT&T or other carrier: similar range
- Hotspot from rep's phone: free but drains phone battery fast
Most teams use rep phone hotspots as backup and budget $15 per month per cellular tablet as primary.
Battery Life
Field reps need 8+ hours of active use per charge. iPad achieves this. Galaxy Tab S series achieves this. Rugged tablets (Active 5) achieve this with larger batteries.
Budget for a backup power bank ($30 to $80) per rep. Running out of battery during a sales pitch kills the deal.
Security
A tablet has customer photos, contact info, and signed contracts. Lose the tablet and that data is exposed.
Mandatory security:
- Passcode (not just pattern) to unlock
- Find My iPad / Samsung Find
- Remote wipe capability
- App lock on sensitive apps (CompanyCam, CRM)
- MDM (mobile device management) for company-owned devices
MDM services like Jamf, Microsoft Intune, or Kandji cost $4 to $12 per device per month and let you remotely lock, wipe, or deprovision devices when reps leave.

FAQ
Do reps really use Apple Pencil?
Yes, for marking up damage photos in real-time during the walkthrough. Not required, but differentiating.
Should reps use personal tablets?
No. Same data ownership issues as personal phones. Company-owned, MDM-managed is the right approach.
What if a rep breaks the tablet?
AppleCare or equivalent adds $80 to $130 and covers accidental damage. Worth it. A cracked screen without coverage costs $250 to $400 to fix.
